Gainsborough makes film debut

One of the best-loved and most enduring classics in English literature, Jane Austin's Pride & Prejudice has finally made it to the big screen. Featuring a star-studded cast including Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, the film is guaranteed to grip the nation when it opens on September 16th 2005.

Aside from the simmering romance, much of Pride & Prejudice's charm originates from its fascinating insight into the conventions of the late 18th century. The film is no exception, with every detail painstakingly recreated. Gainsborough was approached as a specialist traditional weaver to provide the fabric.

In keeping with the scheme of the ballroom, 'Strasbourg Damask' was chosen for its elegant design and shimmering gold and pale green (pictured here in the ballroom scene). Characterised by elegant and refined yet playful motifs, this feminine style used delicate colours and ornate fabrics to move away from a formal concept of design.

Strasbourg Damask is a two over design (two repeats per width) and has a repeat of 76cm. Made from cotton and silk, it is available in any colour as a custom weave.
